The best way to ensure a perfect fit is to measure!
Here at Duende Gems I measure all items lying flat and I suggest that you measure a similar garment to the item that you are thinking about buying INSTEAD OF measuring your body. Bodies are squishy and smooshy and can fit into a wide variety of sizes (at least mine can!) so the best course of action is to measure the garment.
- Get one of those bendy, wiggly measuring tapes. You probably have one in a junk drawer somewhere but if you don’t then they are available almost everywhere (even grocery stores!) and are a MUST HAVE when buying vintage online.
- Pull an item from your closet that is similar to one you’re thinking about buying. (If you’re looking at a blazer go pull out your favorite blazer that fits you like a dream. If you don’t have one just get something as close as possible, like a fitted jacket or even a blazer that may be too small just so you can get an idea of how this one will fit you!)
- Lay it on a flat surface and start comparing the measurements you see against the ones that I’ve provided. If you don’t know HOW to measure a hip or a shoulder or find yourself saying, “Paige I don’t even know what a flippin’ ‘RISE’ even means!!” then just use your handy dandy Googlebox to look up how to measure the thing you’re wondering about. That’s what I did when I first started out and there’s no shame in it! If you STILL can’t figure it out then just ask me, I don’t bite! (Please don’t ask me if I think something will fit you. I won’t answer that question because although I really am great at telling if an item will look good on someone I am not a wizard and should not be trusted with that much power.)
*Something to note- If you’re looking at a pair of jeans in my store and are measuring a modern (not vintage) pair of jeans from your closet chances are that your jeans have a bit of spandex or stretch material in them. Vintage jeans generally do not so that is something to keep in mind. You might want a tad larger size than you normally would if you like to, ya know, eat and bend over and live your dang life.
